Contribution of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to Malaysia


                Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s largest contribution to the country was when he did not hand over Malaysia to the IMF during the financial crisis in1997 and 1998. Even though the pressure of the country’s politics which threatened the country’s leadership was much more transparent than the economic catastrophe, Tun Dr. Mahathir tenaciously put his foot down and did not relinquish Malaysia to the IMF. With his strategically calculated move, he successfully saved Malaysia from being ruled by the new economic colonialist super economic power known as the IMF.

He also has campaigned resolutely to maintain and strengthen racial harmony within Malaysia and to improve the position of the Malays in business and other matters in order to preserve a balance of opportunity for all. He had united the people that live multi-racial Malaysia and stop fighting. With that, Malaysia will always harmony and peaceful without any fighting. Tun Dr Mahathir makes money for Malaysia so that this country will be a national audience and is known throughout the world for its rich countries results.

 Last but not least, Tun Dr Mahathir had also greatly contributed to the Malaysian education system. He had managed to introduce Science and Mathematics to be taught in English (PPSMI) for students from primary schools until secondary school. Even though this program did not pan out as planned, but it still had managed to leave a remarkable value on the importance of learning English to Malaysian citizens. It also had manage to open the eyes of teenagers of the important role of English has in the field of science and technology. According to Tun Dr Mahathir, science in particular changes and advances rapidly. That is why good command in English would assist greatly on Malaysians to keep up with the rapid development. Moreover, most area of modern life applies knowledge using the English language. In addition, Tun Dr Mahathir wants everyone to study in one type of school so he makes Government National Secondary School as well-equipped and attractive.

Legacy of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad


Mahathir had a significant impact on the economy, culture and government of Malaysia. He won five consecutive elections and served for 22 years, longer than any other prime minister in Malaysia’s history. Under him, Malaysia experienced rapid economic growth. He began privatizing government enterprises, including airlines, utilities and telecommunications, which raised money for the government and improved working conditions for many employees, although many of the beneficiaries were UMNO supporters. One of his most significant infrastructure projects was the North-South Expressway, a highway that runs from the Thai border to Singapore. 


From 1988 to 1996, Malaysia saw an 8 percent economic expansion, and Mahathir released an economic plan, The Way Forward, or Vision 2020, asserting that the country would be a fully developed nation by 2020. He helped shift the country’s economic base away from agriculture and natural resources and toward manufacturing and exporting, and the country’s per capita income doubled from 1990 to 1996. Although Malaysia’s growth has slowed and it’s unlikely the country will achieve this goal, the economy remains stable.


Retirement of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad



Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was the fourth prime minister of Malaysia, holding office from 1981 to 2003. At UMNO's general assembly in 2002, Mahathir announced that he would resign as Prime Minister, only for supporters to rush to the stage and convince him tearfully to remain. He subsequently fixed his retirement for October 2003, giving him time to ensure an orderly and uncontroversial transition to his anointed successor, Abdullah Badawi.


In 2003, the Malaysian Government declared Dr. Mahathir to be The Father of Modern Malaysia in recognition of his contribution in turning Malaysia into a modern, advanced and industrialised nation. Following his retirement as Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir was conferred the nation's highest award, Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara, which carries the title "Tun" in recognition of his immense contribution to the country.

Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad was Prime Minister of Malaysia from 1981 to 2003. Arguably he was no ordinary leader and many called him a “leader extraordinaire”.
It was inevitable that he eventually joined politics. He became Member of Parliament in 1964. However, he lost his seat in the subsequent General Election in 1969. Owing to his keen interest in the country’s education, he was appointed Chairman of the first Higher Education Council in 1968, Member of the Higher Education Advisory Council in 1972, Member of the University Court and University Malaya Council, and Chairman of the National University Council in 1974.
In 1981, Tun Dr. Mahathir was appointed as a president of United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), one of the ruling party of Barisan Nasional. Under his leadership, the Barisan Nasional won landslide victories in the 1982, 1986, 1990, 1995 and 1999 General Elections.


As prime minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir’s thoughts and ideas were put to the test. It was during Tun’s time that Malaysia experienced rapid economic growth and achieve modernization on par with some of the developed and industrial countries of the world. There is no doubt now that science played an important contributing role in that resounding socio-economic success.

Personal Details of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad


During Independence Day.

Tun Dr Mahathir was born on 10th of June 1925 in the late afternoon in Alor Setar, Kedah. He was the youngest among 9 children, 6 boys and 3 girls. His brothers are Murad, Mustaffa, Mahadi, Mashahor and Omar while his sisters are Johora, Rafeah and Habsah. 

Tun Dr Mahathir was a student at King Edward VII College in Singapore and he's taking medicine course there. After that he became a government medical officer for a while before left the job in 1957 in order to build his own practice in Alor Setar. He was the town's first Malay and successful doctor. 


Tun Dr Mahathir's family started when he met Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Binti Mohd Ali, a fellow medical student. They get married in 1956 and had their first child, Marina, in 1957, before conceiving three others and adopting three more in the 28 years following.
