Retirement of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was the fourth prime minister of Malaysia, holding office from 1981 to 2003. At UMNO's general assembly in 2002, Mahathir announced that he would resign as Prime Minister, only for supporters to rush to the stage and convince him tearfully to remain. He subsequently fixed his retirement for October 2003, giving him time to ensure an orderly and uncontroversial transition to his anointed successor, Abdullah Badawi.

In 2003, the Malaysian Government declared Dr. Mahathir to be The Father of Modern Malaysia in recognition of his contribution in turning Malaysia into a modern, advanced and industrialised nation. Following his retirement as Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir was conferred the nation's highest award, Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara, which carries the title "Tun" in recognition of his immense contribution to the country.

  1. Tun's retirement was the most shocking moment at that time. He had done so many improvement that brought Malaysia as a well known country and also had established a good relationship with other countries.
